Public Tree Removal and Replacement Program

Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone

UPDATE: The City will begin the removal of higher flammability trees, as needed, to provide a 30-foot defensible space around structures within the Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone (VHFHSZ) following additional outreach with the community. This will occur as soon as safely possible under the COVID-19 social distancing restrictions.

The first phase will take place in the Trousdale Estates area. The work to remove trees will take up to one year. The City will plant replacement trees as determined through an outreach process with residents (more information below.)

The purpose is to mitigate the fire risk surrounding a particular species of City trees determined to pose a high flammability risk.

Residents should expect the following:

  • Trucks and equipment working from the street.
  • Moderate impacts to on-street parking.
  • Moderate impact to traffic flow.
  • Moderate to high noise at times.
  •   Trees will be assessed to verify the distance to nearby structures prior to removal. Trees found to be within 30 feet of a structure will be removed.
  • Trees will also be inspected to ensure that no nesting birds are disturbed. Trees with nests will be removed after August 31.

City staff will work with the community to select replacement trees that are appropriate for the site conditions. In some cases, it may not be recommended to plant a replacement tree. The initial meeting to discuss tree replacement will be scheduled in the near future depending on developments related to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
