What is fiber?Fiber optic technology is the gold standard for sending information in a digital format. In contrast to existing copper wire that uses electrical currents, fiber sends pulses of light along optical fibers. Fiber transfers more data, more reliably, more quickly, more securely, more efficiently and over longer distances than copper.
What does that mean?Fiber is better than copper. The fastest available copper-to-the-home option in our city has speeds maxing out at 300 megabits-per-second. Beverly Hills Fiber will provide speeds at least twice as fast as those enabled by existing copper connections.
Why does that matter?For most residents, who are avid users of internet-enabled devices, the internet is as essential as any utility provided by the city. We depend on the internet for our laptops, TV's, smartphones, home security systems, game consoles and more. And we expect to use our devices simultaneously - even at times of peak usage - without sacrificing speed. Fiber makes that a reality in a way copper and other less advanced materials cannot.
Why is 'Fiber-to-the-Premise' a Big Deal?Fiber is already widely in use as the best-in-class information infrastructure. In Beverly Hills, as in most cities, fiber can stop as far as 10,000 feet away from a residence, with copper being the link into the home. This addition of copper greatly diminishes the speed of the connection. Copper = slow. Fiber = fast. Changing out the copper connection for fiber will be an impactful change, adding a critical 'last link' in terms of speed, reliability and scalability.
